But I Don't Want to SELL Anything!

When I got into the MLM business with Robin one of the first things I told him was "I don't want to sell anything."

"No problem," he says, "you don't have to."

"Really?" I said.

"Really" he said.

He said that because when we first got into this particular network marketing company, it wasn't about selling, it was about recruiting.  The problem with forgetting about selling and concentrating on recruiting is that in order for anyone to make money consistently products have to move--and no matter how you cut it, that is about selling. If you concentrate totally on recruiting, the people you recruit concerntrate on recruiting and no one is selling, pretty soon people start dropping out and the next thing you know your business collapses.  If you talk to Robin now, I think you would get a different perspective.

You can read a lot of books about selling.  About how selling is not about selling but about matching up people with their needs.  In some cases, it is more about making people THINK they need your product, especially in the direct selling business. As many of you know, I was a consultant for Tastefully Simple for about three years.  I would say that Tastefully Simple is one example of really creating a need.  Let's face it, from a health standpoint the world would probably be better off without TS almond poundcake, but I could make you think you absolutely had to have almond poundcake for you next family get together (or even dinner that night!), meeting your need for acceptance and praise.  When I told you how easy it was, I met your need of saving time.  Pretty soon, you HAD to have almond poundcake and I was there to frequently remind you how much (and how often) you needed it. This was true of pretty much all of their products.  I don't think anyone ever came up to me and told me how much TS products had changed their lives--except maybe that they were gaining weight!

There are products out there, however, many of the natural supplements for example, that I do think improve people's lives and it is great that they exist.  I also think those products are getting better all the time and are meeting more and more needs in an aging population.

The point is that selling is what keeps any business going--even an MLM.  You can recruit all day long, but if you aren't selling and the people you recruit aren't selling, no one is making any money and a lot of people are walking around out there with unmet needs!   I think that there are many great MLMs out there and many of them have fabulous products that can truly make a difference in your life.  Just understand that an MLM, like any business, needs to have products moving out the door, whether they are sold or "meeting needs."    It's part of the business if it is a part that you don't want to do, or a part you don't want to learn how to do, then maybe the MLM business is not for you!

Thanks for reading!
