So, What Do You Sell?
As I said before, one of the things I hate on websites are sites that go on and on forever and you never really know what they are trying to say. There are several network marketing companies that teach that same methodology to their representatives to use when they are talking to people about the company. I'm not sure where this training comes from although I'm sure Robin can tell you the history behind it!
When I first met Robin, he was involved in a company that used this technique. The first time I talked to Robin it was not in person. We were talking by IM on the computer. The conversation went something like this.
Me: "So, what do you do?" (back then I didn't know any better and innocently asked that question)
Robin: "I'm in this really great business that can make you residual income."
Me: "What's residual income?"
Robin: "Income that is generated by your business even when you don't do anything."
Me: "Cool, what do you sell."
Robin: "We don't sell anything."
Me: "Then how do you make money?"
Robin: "We have an opportunity that everyone will want to get involved in. This is an area that is going to explode."
Me (getting a little frustrated now): "What is it???"
Robin: "Some of the best minds in the world are in this company."
Me: "I really need to see it and research a little before I get involved. And I really don't want to sell anything."
Robin: "Don't worry, we'll talk about it when me meet."
Since it was a while before we actually met he eventually relented and gave me the website to look at. He told me later that he was glad most people weren't as insistent as I was. This was also with a company that had methodology that I never really cared for. Now, I am very happy to say that Robin has abandoned this method (and that company) some time ago and no longer even approves of it being used or taught.. If you are still using this method, you should considering abandoning it as well. From my perspective, there are several reasons for not approaching people this way.
First, it is very inefficient. Why spend all that time avoiding talking about what you really want to tell them about. I think enthusiasm will beat avoidance any time.
Second, you can annoy people (like me!). I figure my time is valuable. Why do I want to waste my time trying to get information out of you? If this is such a great opportunity, just tell me about it. Sometimes network marketers, especially when they are first starting out, get so hung up on worrying about what people will think of them that they have a difficult time telling them about the business no matter how great it is. Worry less, talk more.
Third, it makes me think you have something to hide! Why would be afraid to tell me about your business? Is it illegal or something? If it is so great, why won't you just tell me!
I'm sure Robin has even more reasons not to do this and I'm sure you will hear about them on his blog when he responds to this!
If your products and company are great, then show it! If you want more training tips, talk to Robin!
Also see you all Wednesday and have a great holiday weekend.
